The guidelines reflect the intent and meaning of 'supervision' as defined in the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004 and to assist the building and construction industry in complying with legislative requirements. An apprentice or trainee must be supervised by a suitably qualified person who is a permanent employee of the same employer and who works predominantly the same hours as the apprentice or trainee. For trainees, a suitably qualified supervisor can be the employer or a staff member who already has the skills and knowledge that the trainee is learning, which may have been gained through a variety of pathways, including on-the-job experience. For apprentices, a suitably qualified supervisor can be the employer or a staff member who has an equivalent or higher level qualification in the same field or trade to the one being undertaken by the apprentice.
