Description
This course discusses the fundamentals of computer networks. The emergence of computer networks, an overview of OSI reference model. Network topology: Bus, Star, Ring, and Mesh topologies. Physical medium: Benefits of digital transmission, Data encoding techniques, Wire propagation effects, UTP cables, Coaxial cables, Optical fibers, Wireless transmission. Multiplexing: FDM, WDM, TDM, STDM. The evolution of telecom networks. Packet switches. SONET/SDH. Fiber optic components and fiber optic communication. Multiple access protocols: FDMA, TDMA, CDMA, Token Ring, FDDI. Data link protocols. Error detection and correction. Satellite communication. Ethernet.
